TL;DR:

  • Most of the best crossplay games are free: Fortnite, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Genshin Impact, Brawlhalla, Fall Guys and Roblox all cost nothing to download, though they sell optional in-game items.
  • Minecraft is the one big paid pick. Java & Bedrock Edition for PC is listed from $29.99, and Bedrock is the edition that plays across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile.
  • Brawlhalla and Genshin Impact reach the widest range of devices, including both iOS and Android alongside PC and consoles.
  • Crossplay, cross-progression and cross-purchase are three different things. A game can let you play together without carrying your purchases across, so check all three before you spend.
  • Online play with strangers carries risks. Review each platform's chat, privacy and spending controls, especially for children.

The best cross-platform games

Crossplay means players on different devices can join the same match. It is not the same as cross-progression, which carries your saved progress between devices, so we say which each game offers. All prices are what the official stores listed on 24 October 2026.

Fortnite

Best for: A free, always-updated shooter with many modes

Fortnite is the obvious starting point because nearly everyone can run it. Epic says you can download it free on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC and Android, and that Fortnite Battle Royale modes and Fortnite Festival are free to play. It can also be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, and Xbox Cloud Gaming does not require a paid Game Pass subscription.

On consoles you can change the setting under Settings, then Account and Privacy, then Gameplay Privacy. On Switch, PC and mobile, Epic says it is currently not possible to disable crossplay. Epic's announcements describe cross-progression and cross-purchase once your accounts are connected.

The catch is the shop. Fortnite is free, but cosmetics, battle passes and other items cost money, and the game is built to make you want them. Agree on a spending limit with children before they link a payment card.

Pros
  • Free to download on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC and Android
  • Can also be streamed through cloud services
  • Progress and purchases follow your Epic account
Cons
  • Crossplay cannot be turned off on Switch, PC or mobile
  • Constant stream of paid cosmetics

Minecraft is the paid exception on this list, and its crossplay comes with one rule you must know. Bedrock Edition players on Windows PCs, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices can play together online. Java Edition, which also runs on Mac and Linux, only plays with other Java players, and worlds from Java are not compatible with Bedrock.

Xbox's store lists Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC from $29.99, with Deluxe and Ultimate collections at $39.99 and $49.99 that add Minecoins and add-ons. Minecraft.net says you can subscribe to Realms Plus or Realms for Java to play with up to 10 friends on a private server, and that Marketplace content is Bedrock only.

The hidden cost is the console subscription. Online play on consoles generally requires a platform plan such as Xbox, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online, while PC needs only an internet connection. Official pages also list slightly different device sets, so confirm your exact hardware on Minecraft.net before buying.

Pros
  • Bedrock Edition plays across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile
  • Realms let up to 10 friends share a private server
  • Huge catalog of creator-made add-ons
Cons
  • Java and Bedrock players cannot play together
  • Online play on consoles needs a platform subscription

Rocket League

Best for: Fast, skill-based car soccer with friends on any device

Rocket League website
rocketleague.com homepage

Rocket League is the cleanest crossplay experience on the list. Epic's support page says players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Steam can matchmake against each other in all online match types, and the setting is on by default. The game is free to play, and its latest season, Season 24, began on 23 September 2026.

Progression is shared if you link an Epic account. Rank, Rocket Pass progress and inventory can carry across connected platforms, though linking is optional because full crossplay works either way. Premium DLC bought before the game went free can be used across PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

The exception is Switch. Items owned on Nintendo Switch cannot be used on other platforms, so Switch players who move to another device start over on cosmetics. If you play on several systems, link your accounts before spending.

Pros
  • Crossplay across Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Steam
  • Rank, Rocket Pass and inventory can be shared via an Epic account
  • Easy to learn, hard to master
Cons
  • Items bought on Nintendo Switch cannot be used on other platforms
  • Paid cosmetics and passes

Apex Legends

Best for: Squad-based shooting with abilities

Visit ea.com

Free plan?Yes

Apex Legends is EA's free hero shooter. Its FAQ lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC through the EA app and Steam, and says it can be downloaded for free, though a platform account and subscription sold separately may be required. EA's help page says crossplay is supported across the EA app, Steam, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch 2, and a newer EA update adds the Epic Games Store.

Crossplay is automatic on consoles. PC players cannot turn it off, and the setting only appears for players on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. EA also supports cross-progression so your progress carries across platforms.

There is a competitive trade-off. If an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch player parties up with a PC player, EA says the group is placed into PC matches. For casual friends that is fine, but a console player may find those lobbies tougher. Apex Legends Mobile was a separate game with no crossplay with console or PC, according to an older EA answer.

Pros
  • Free to download
  • Crossplay with all platforms and cross-progression
  • PC and console parties supported
Cons
  • Console players who party with PC friends are placed in PC matches
  • Console online play may need a paid subscription

Genshin Impact

Best for: A story-driven open-world adventure you can take from phone to console

Visit genshin.hoyoverse.com
Starts atFree
Free plan?Yes

Genshin Impact is an open-world action role-playing game, and HoYoverse lists crossplay across PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox. A recent support article says cross-save works on those platforms: sign in with the same HoYoverse account on each device to load your progress. HoYoverse's support pages also say purchases are no longer restricted across platforms since version 5.8, so someone registered on PSN can buy on PC or mobile, and the reverse.

This is the best fit on the list for people who want to start on a phone and continue on a console. It is also a game with optional spending, and many of its paid items use random reward systems. That makes it a game to approach with a spending limit, especially for teenagers.

Older material is conflicting. A PlayStation 5 launch FAQ said PlayStation data could not be accessed on PC or mobile, but newer support articles describe cross-save across all five platforms. Trust the current support pages and check the latest rules for your console before you invest time.

Pros
  • Free to play on PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox
  • Same HoYoverse account loads progress on each platform
  • Co-op play across supported devices
Cons
  • Paid items use random rewards (gacha)
  • Needs a HoYoverse account to carry progress
Brawlhalla logo

Brawlhalla

Best for: Platform fighting with full crossplay on every device

Visit brawlhalla.com
Starts atFree
Free plan?Yes

Brawlhalla is a free-to-play platform fighter in the style of Smash Bros., and its homepage says it offers full cross-play across all listed platforms. That list is unusually long: PC through Steam, Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. It lists more than 50 playable characters, called Legends, and supports up to 8 local or online players.

For a mixed group, this is one of the easiest ways to put everyone in one lobby. A friend on a phone can join someone on a console without anyone buying a new device. The page says it is free to play with in-game purchases that include random items, so it does carry the same spending considerations as other free games.

Because it is less famous than the shooters, some modes may have smaller queues. Private lobbies with friends avoid that issue.

Pros
  • Full crossplay across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS and Android
  • More than 50 playable characters
  • Up to 8 players locally or online
Cons
  • In-game purchases include random items
  • Smaller community than Fortnite or Rocket League
Fall Guys logo
#7

Fall Guys

Best for: Light party games and short rounds with friends

Visit fallguys.com
Starts atFree
Free plan?Yes

Fall Guys is a free-to-play obstacle-course battle royale. Its official pages describe it as free for all, with crossplay, cross-platform parties and cross-progression through an Epic Games account. The platform list in the announcement is PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and the Epic Games Store.

You can invite up to 3 friends into a party, according to Epic's help pages, after you add each other by Epic display name. Fall Guys Creative lets players build their own courses, and the homepage also names Ranked Knockout.

The first platform where you link your Epic account becomes your primary profile for items such as costumes and nameplates, so choose that console or PC carefully. Short rounds and low stakes make it a good first crossplay game for younger players, but the in-game shop is still there.

Pros
  • Free to play
  • Cross-platform parties and cross-progression through an Epic account
  • Creative mode lets players build their own courses
Cons
  • Platform list is mainly console and Epic Games Store
  • Cosmetic shop
Among Us logo

Among Us

Best for: Social deduction games with friends

Visit innersloth.com
Starts at$4.99
Free plan?Yes

Among Us is a social deduction party game from Innersloth. The Steam page says it supports cross-platform play between PC, console, Android and iOS, and that you can play with 4 to 15 players online or over local WiFi. Some players are secretly Impostors and the rest try to finish tasks or vote them out. It offers Classic and Hide n Seek modes and four maps.

Steam lists the base price at $4.99, and when we reviewed it, the page showed a sale price of $2.99. Innersloth announced in 2018 that mobile versions would be free to play with ads, but we could not confirm that policy for each store today, so check the App Store or Google Play listing for the current price.

The catch is that Among Us needs enough people. A group of 8 to 10 friends across phones, consoles and PCs works well, while an empty public lobby does not. Use the in-game chat settings, especially for kids.

Pros
  • Cross-platform play between PC, console, Android and iOS
  • 4 to 15 players online or over local WiFi
  • Cheap to buy on PC
Cons
  • Needs a group to be fun
  • Price differs by platform

Roblox

Best for: Millions of player-made worlds on almost any device

Visit roblox.com

Free plan?Yes

Roblox is a platform rather than one game, and that is why its crossplay is so broad. Its download page lists iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Meta Quest, Microsoft Store, Amazon Store, Samsung Galaxy Store and Mac. Roblox's help center says the app on PS4 and PS5, available in select countries, lets players join experiences with users on Xbox, iOS, Android, desktop and Meta Quest, and PlayStation crossplay can be turned off in settings.

Because creators build the experiences, quality varies. That variety is the appeal: you can try obstacle courses, role-play and tycoon games without buying anything first.

Roblox needs more parental attention than most games here. It involves chat with other players and optional spending in its own currency, so set up parental controls and review friend and chat settings with younger players.

Pros
  • Apps for iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Meta Quest, Microsoft Store and more
  • Players on different devices can join the same experiences
  • Huge variety of games
Cons
  • Quality varies widely between experiences
  • Open to chat and spending, so parental controls matter

How we picked these

We compared each game's official site, store listing and support pages, then checked which platforms it supports, whether crossplay and cross-progression are included, and the entry price. We did not run hands-on tests across devices, so where a platform list changes by region or store, we say so. We looked for a mix of well-known free games, one paid classic and smaller picks, and where a page was unclear, such as Among Us mobile pricing, we say we could not confirm it.

How to choose a crossplay game

Check which devices your friends use

List every device in your group, then check that the game supports all of them. Brawlhalla and Genshin Impact cover phones and consoles, Rocket League and Apex Legends lean toward PC and consoles, and Minecraft Java excludes consoles.

Understand the three cross features

Crossplay lets you join the same match. Cross-progression keeps your level and rewards, and cross-purchase lets items you bought carry over. Rocket League shares progress through an Epic account, but Switch purchases do not carry over.

Budget for subscriptions and items

Free games still make money through cosmetics and passes. Consoles often require a paid online plan for multiplayer, and Minecraft's Realms and Marketplace Pass are separate subscriptions. Decide a monthly cap in advance.

Set safety controls

Open chat is the main risk in any online game. Use each platform's parental controls, turn off voice or text chat for children, and limit friend requests.

FAQ

What is the best free cross-platform game?

Fortnite, Rocket League and Brawlhalla are the strongest free crossplay choices. Fortnite has the most modes, Rocket League has the tidiest competitive crossplay, and Brawlhalla covers phones as well as consoles and PC.

Can PlayStation and Xbox players play together?

In the games that support it, yes. Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Fall Guys and Brawlhalla all list PlayStation and Xbox crossplay. Check whether each game requires a separate online subscription on your console.

Does crossplay mean my progress carries over?

Not always. Crossplay is about joining matches. Rocket League, Fall Guys and Fortnite tie progress to an Epic account, and Genshin Impact uses a HoYoverse account, but each has its own rules and exceptions, such as Rocket League's Switch limitation.

Are there cross-platform games that work on phones and consoles?

Yes. Brawlhalla, Genshin Impact, Roblox, Minecraft Bedrock and Among Us all list both mobile and console support. Confirm your exact devices on the official pages first, since platform lists change.

Is Minecraft cross-platform?

Yes, with a rule. Bedrock Edition plays across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile, but Java Edition only plays with other Java players. The two editions cannot play together.

Are free crossplay games safe for kids?

They can be, with the right settings. Review privacy and chat controls on each platform, set a spending limit, and consider playing in private lobbies with friends. Roblox and Fortnite in particular have open social features.
